How to help a loved one keep up with their medications
By the HoraDose team · Updated October 9, 2026 · 2 min read
To help a loved one with their medications, start by talking with them and respect their choices. Review things with their pharmacist, simplify their routine, then choose together a way to stay in touch: in person, by phone, or with an app they accept.
Start by talking about it
Your loved one remains in charge of their own health. Ask what would help them, rather than deciding for them. Help that is accepted is help that lasts.
Review things with their pharmacist
With their agreement, go with them to the pharmacy, or call together. Ask for an up-to-date list of their medications and the instruction for each.
Simplify their routine
- A weekly pill organizer, filled with them or prepared by the pharmacy.
- Doses tied to the moments of their day — getting up, meals, bedtime — if their pharmacist allows it.
- A fixed place for their medications, in plain view.
Stay in touch, even from afar
A call at a set time, a regular visit, a message: choose what suits them.
An app can also help, if your loved one agrees. With Ensemble, in HoraDose, they can let you see whether their doses for the day are done; by default, you do not see the names of their medications, and it is up to them to decide, if they wish, to show them to you. They can remove this sharing whenever they want.
An app does not replace your calls. Ensemble is not a monitoring or emergency service.
When to talk to a professional
If your loved one gets mixed up with their medications, often forgets them, refuses to take them, falls or seems sleepier than usual, talk to their doctor or their pharmacist — with them, if possible. In an emergency, call emergency services.
And you?
